Common name Tobacco
Scientific name Nicotiana_tabacum
Family name Nightshade
Grown as the major cash crop in Zimbabwe , tobacco continues to gain popularity across the entire country, with many new tobacco growing districts emerging in other parts of the country -areas which traditionally have been designated non-tobacco growing zones in the country.
This upward trend in tobacco production gives our country influence at global level in the dynamics of the tobacco industry.
Our aim is to influence the production of tobacco in a simplified and technologically-based approach so as to lower the production costs as well as to help the farmer to improve the quality of their crop, for them to fetch better market prices. Our farmer must also be able to access the markets directly without going through merchants so that they realise maximum benefit.
Ultimately, we aim to influence our farmers to go into partial and or full value addition of this crop locally, not only to produce cigarettes for smoking but the many other products which can be derived out of tobacco, such as processing the tobacco in its green form prior to curing to extract vital chemicals for use in medicine and industry such as drugs and insecticides. Tobacco stalks may also be harvested for chemical extraction.
More of the specifics on tobacco value addition will be found in the OneAcre Tobacco Manual.
